Curriculum

Design Technology

We develop our pupils to be highly literate and competent. Our curriculum is designed to develop confident learners who can communicate and socialise in a variety of situations and settings. Our boys develop their resilience and independence as they gain qualifications needed to access further education, employment, or training. They are given the opportunity to understand the world around them and have empathy for others including those from different races religions, backgrounds, or cultures.

They learn how to keep themselves healthy and safe and develop a sense of fun and humour so that they are able to fully enjoy life with what they choose to eat.

Our vision for Design Technology (Food Technology)

Food is a vital part of our daily lives and is essential for life. As our pupils become adults and have busy lives, it is easy to choose food which has been ready prepared. However, it is more nutritious and often cheaper to cook simple and delicious food that is healthy and appealing.

At Eden Boys Leadership Academy Manchester, the students will develop their knowledge and understanding of nutrition, healthy eating, food preparation, food science, hygiene, safety, cooking techniques and sensory analysis.

Key Stage 3 Intent

In Year 7, students will harness advanced skills to create innovative, technical, and practical solutions for lifelong challenges. This educational framework empowers the pupils to gain knowledge, understand fundamental knife skills, and explore a wide range of culinary tools using diverse approaches. They will develop the ability to assess and evaluate not only their own work but also that of others, akin to the standards seen on the show “MasterChef,” all while adhering to fundamental culinary practices. Students will also cultivate an awareness of maintaining good health, practicing food safety and hygiene, and honing basic food preparation skills to foster self-confidence and independence. The curriculum underscores the importance of healthy eating, nutrition, their functions, and the concept of balanced diets.

In Year 8, students will continue to build on the strong foundation laid in Year 7. They will further develop their practical skills with the aim of gaining recognition in the catering industry. Pupils will confront genuine challenges, applying technical methods and adapting specialised knowledge to address real-world issues. This process will foster a true appreciation for both British culinary traditions and a wide range of International cuisines, equipping them to make informed and responsible decisions in food preparation. The course will prioritise understanding and catering to special diets and their dietary requirements, including those associated with imbalanced nutritional plans.

In Year 9, building upon the strong foundation established in Year 7 and Year 8, our curriculum takes students on an enriching journey. During this academic year, pupils explore real-world challenges and work on developing practical solutions. Through the exploration of various cooking techniques, pupils gain valuable insights into a wide spectrum of culinary preparation methods. Our core objective is to equip students with skills that not only enhance their grasp of the scientific principles behind food but also empower them to approach current and future challenges with creativity and innovation.

Throughout the topics, students not only acquire knowledge about food-related subjects but also gain a broader understanding of societal issues. Over the course of the year, they showcase their technical abilities, which will serve them well in making informed decisions when considering their KS4 options in the field of Hospitality and Catering. Our primary focus remains centred on the art of cooking and the effective preservation of food.

LEARNING JOURNEY

Key Stage 3 Impact

Fluency composites are completed after numerous mini check points to assess mastery of the topic/s. Gaps or misconceptions that have been identified upon the completion of fluency composites are re-visited and re-assessed in the fluency composite that follows after a period of time in order to compel pupils to recall.
